I spent the last 15 years or so dropping coins into an old glass 5-gallon water bottle. It was almost half full. I took sample handfuls and recorded my results. For anyone interested, the average value density was found to be $23.58/kg with a standard deviation of $1.87. These results are for a person that drops all coins into the jar and never takes them out(till now, of course).

This is a really awesome little calculator. It was about 3.00 off of the actual total. Thank you very much for taking the time to put this together!

male or female and hand size do not really matter, since all a hand full of coins are is a random sample of coins in the jar. It uses the average of the coins you grabbed by it's weight, then just multiplies this by what the total weight of the jar is. they also assume the jar as nothing or close to it. I use an old 5lb pretzel jug {plastic} it has almost no weight... but can hold, for me, 3 years worth of change.

Very accurate! Calculated value of 51 pounds of coins was $1019 and the actual value was $1026! Thanks!

Seems to work. We will see when I go to cash mine in. It said I have 859 in there we will see. And to the guy who said hand size would make a difference, it wouldnt. It knows the weight of each coin, and then calculates what the handful weighs and then calculates what the entire jug weighs based on the value and weight of your handful.

Pays to pay attention! Jar weight factor is right there at the top, defaults at 3 pounds, mine weighed in at 2 so the calculator is very close with its estimate. Size of hand may still be a factor for better accuracy! Thanks for the calculator!

Pretty close. I had 26.88 in a metal woven container. The calculator estimated $39.27
The calculator has to factor in the weight of the "jar" and even male or female hand.

This seems like a great concept, except you don't specify what size JAR you are referring to. I have a huge plastic pretzel jar, so it is going to take much more than 7 handfuls of quarters to fill it. (That is the answer I got when I calculated 12 quarters in my random handful.) So maybe you could specify what size jar you mean, such as a quart size Mason jar etc. =)

The calculator estimated my stash at $144, and I ended up having $156, but my scale is not real accurate. I thought it was close enough! I had no idea how much it would amount to. I love this calculator!

Pretty good estimate I believe. A short way through the counting process at the bank, the machine error-ed. It printed a receipt of the totals at that point which amounted to $156. I knew the weight, so I entered the first receipts values for all the counted coins. The final calculation was about 24 dollars off. The total for 37.0lbs of change was $476, and this calculator totaled about $500; closer to what I thought it would be.
